Location choices:
Hair Salon:
The choice to film inside a hair salon was a natural one. It epitomises the theme and character of our trailer, and therefore became a central location in our project. We wanted our trailer to appear as if the killer was in a place of comfort; a natural habitat where she cannot be challenged. As such, this setting serves to heighten the sense of fear felt by the unnamed victim, as it implies the killer knows her way around, knows every possible escape route. Conversely, it diminishes any hope of escape for the victim, transforming an everyday salon into a terrifying maze.
Underground
The underground setting of later scenes provides a juxtaposition to the innocent appearance of the storefront. We chose to film in this location as the transition between above and below ground accompanies the dramatic change in mood that the trailer presents, first appearing as the dialogue moves from small talk to jealousy fuelled rage.
The Girl with all the Gifts
This trailer is presented in 132 seconds using 8 different locations; These 8 locations are: a base, field, forest, an abandoned building, city, army truck, hospital, and the roof of a building.
The wide range of locations presented here, in contrast to our own trailer, which focused on 2 core locations, is used to convey a very different story. The frequent changing of the locale creates a journey based narrative structure, with the characters moving from one location to each other as the trailer, and film, progresses.
In our trailer, we aimed to create the opposite of this, and as such, aimed to limit the number of locations featured within our trailer. The trailer in its entirety is set with the hair salon and its basement, with an aim to create a stifled, claustrophobic atmosphere. Just as the trailer does not leave the confines of the salon, nor can the viewer. In this, we hoped to create an atmosphere in which the viewer could share in the terror and hopelessness felt by the victim.
